Resumen

The highland is the habitat of the camelids; the vicuña is the smallest wild camelid with a fine fiber. The Reserva Nacional Pampa Galeras – Barbara D’Achille (RNPG) in Peru has been home to vicuñas since ancient times, where the vicuñas coexist with domestic animals. The objective of this research was to analyze the effect that the presence of sheep population generates on the temporal stability of the vicuña population in the RNPG under the system dynamics approach. The methodology consisted of using a socio-ecological model that considers the main relationships of the ecosystem and four scenarios were proposed, the first considers variations in the variables associated with the sheep (food consumption by the sheep and time spent in the reserve) and three scenarios considering changes in precipitation (permanent rainfall of different intensity, rainfall with periodic maximum and minimum pulses and random rainfall) using Stella software. The main results indicate that the population of sheep does not directly influence of the vicuña population because the behavior of vicuñas in all scenarios tends to self-regulate over time (10 years). The sheep population shows temporal permanence in the RNPG; and their presence is inversely associated with the rainy season, which suggests that the rural families access the reserve to marginally use the pastures during the dry season.
